The Smorgon Steel business was founded in 1981 and
commenced steel production in 1983 with the
commissioning of Australia's largest steel mini-mill
at Laverton, Victoria. Since then, Smorgon Steel has
followed a strategy of growth through expansion into
metal recycling, growth of steel production and
processing capacity, the acquisition of downstream
manufacturing and distribution operations, and
product and market diversification.
Smorgon Steel's activities range from collecting and
processing almost 1.5 million tonnes of steel and
other metallic scrap each year to steel making and
the production and distribution of a wide range of
metal products. The Company makes almost 1 million
tonnes of new steel each year – all from recycled
scrap!
This probably makes Smorgon Steel Australia’s
largest vertically-integrated recycling company.
Smorgon Steel has operations throughout Australia,
Asia and North America, and employs approximately
5,600 people. We are proud to be involved in the
many communities in which our operations are based,
and we delighted to support the AFL Premiership
Players Club and its objectives. |
