Vale Mick Nolan
09/11/1949 - 27/05/2008

By Barry Davis

Mick Nolan was recruited from the Wangaratta Rovers to play 107 VFL games with North Melbourne including the victorious 1975 Premiership side.

Mick, affectionately known as the ‘Galloping Gasometer’, was a big man in more ways than one. Not only was his big frame easily recognised but he also had a big heart to go with it. He was very generous with his time and always would not hesitate to give an autograph and an encouraging word to young children. His happy and somewhat casual manner endeared him to all that met him.

In relation to his football he was regarded by Barry Cable and myself as one of the best tap ruckmen that we had the pleasure of playing with. His ability to move into position and then direct the ball to the advantage of the team was only half of his efforts. He would never hesitate to follow his initial work with a block (which he did so well) or a tackle. Despite his huge size (124kg) he had all the skills of the game including being able to gather a low ground ball.

Mick was loved by many and will be sadly missed.
